Office Chair Pros and Cons, by Type

You have narrowed it down to a type rather than a model, and every page that claims to list the pros and cons of each type is selling one of them.

Several different chairs arranged in a bright room

Picked on published fit specifications, each linked to its source. How we pick.

The short answer

Six types, and each trades one thing for another. Mesh breathes but sags; upholstered lasts but holds heat; big-and-tall adds capacity but not back height; kneeling opens the hips but loads the shins; saddle is the most upright but has no backrest; gaming looks supportive and is shaped for reclining.

This page sits under Head-to-Head Comparisons. If you want the fit numbers before the shortlist, start with the seat height guide and the seat depth guide.

We earn a commission if you buy through our links. It does not change your price, and it does not change our ranking. Prices are pulled from Amazon's own API and stamped with the date we fetched them — where we have no live figure, the button opens the current price on the retailer's page instead. Full disclosure.

The six types, side by side

Every chair type is a trade. The useful question is not which type is best - no type is - but which trade suits your body, your room and your working day.

What each type gives you and what it costs you
TypeThe proThe conBest for
Mesh taskBreathes; spreads load across a surface rather than a contourTension slackens with age, sooner on cheaper frames; no shaped seatWarm rooms, long days, average-sized sitters
Upholstered / foam taskHolds a shaped contour; does not sag like a membraneHolds heat; foam compresses over years rather than tensions slackeningCooler rooms, and anyone who wants a contoured seat
Big and tallHigher published capacity, wider pan, reinforced baseOften no taller in the back than a standard chair; large footprintHeavier or broader sitters - not automatically taller ones
KneelingOpen hip angle maintains the lumbar curve without a padLoads the shins; no backrest; hard to sit in all dayA second chair for an hour or two a day
Saddle / perchHighest seat heights; most upright pelvis; multiple sitting positionsNo conventional backrest; needs a raised deskRaised work surfaces, and hip-angle precautions
GamingTall backrest, often a headrest, strong reclineBucket seat shaped for reclining rather than typing; narrow panReclined use - less so for eight hours of desk work

Two rows there contradict what the category names imply, and they are worth dwelling on.

Big and tall is about weight, not height

A chair sold as big-and-tall is engineered around capacity: a reinforced base, a heavier gas cylinder, a wider seat pan, and a published rating of 350 to 450 lb. What it very often is not is taller in the backrest. If your complaint is that the top of the back lands between your shoulder blades rather than above them, a big-and-tall chair may not change anything - the figure to check is published back height, not the category name. The big and tall roundup separates the two, and the 6 ft 4 in page works the height case specifically.

Gaming chairs are shaped for the wrong position

The bucket shape that makes a gaming chair look supportive comes from racing seats, where the job is to hold a reclined body against cornering forces. At a desk, typing, upright, the raised bolsters are narrowing a seat that was already narrow and the deep back is holding you in a position you are not in. Our office chair versus gaming chair comparison goes through it properly. If you genuinely spend your day reclined, the criticism does not apply.

Mesh or foam, settled

The short version: mesh is cooler and ages by slackening; foam is warmer and ages by compressing. Neither is better for back pain, because neither changes where the lumbar support sits or how high the seat is - which are the two things that actually decide whether a chair hurts you. Mesh versus foam is the full head-to-head, and are mesh office chairs good takes the material on its own terms.

Alternative seating: useful, oversold

Kneeling chairs and saddle stools both do something a task chair cannot - they change the hip angle, which changes how the pelvis sits and therefore what the lumbar spine does. That is real, and it is why they have a following. What neither does is replace a conventional chair for a full day: a kneeling chair puts load through the shins and gives you nothing to lean into, and a saddle in the perch position has no backrest at all.

Both are best understood as a second position rather than a replacement. Kneeling chair versus office chair sets out the trade, how long you can sit in one is the honest answer about duration, and are kneeling chairs bad for your knees covers the risk nobody selling them mentions.

Which type for which problem

Starting type by what is actually wrong
If your problem isStart withWhy
A damp back by mid-afternoonMesh taskAirflow is the one thing mesh does that nothing else does
A seat that has gone hardUpholstered task, or a cushionA contoured pan spreads load; a cushion is the cheap test
Over the capacity of your current chairBig and tallCapacity is a structural rating, not a comfort one
Standing up is the hard partSaddle or a high-seat task chairSeat height shortens the forward travel needed to stand
Stiffness from one unchanging positionA second chair of a different typeChanging position beats optimizing one
Located low back painTask chair with adjustable lumbar heightNothing else lets you put the support where it hurts

If the last row is yours, how to choose a chair for back pain works the decision in order, and how to compare office chairs is the method for turning a shortlist into a choice.

The picks in full

1. Best for The upholstered task chair case

Steelcase Leap v2

The type specimen for an upholstered task chair done properly, and the reason the category has not been replaced by mesh. Steelcase publishes a 16 to 20.5 in seat height, a fixed 15.75 in pan, a 19.25 in seat width, a 25 in back height, arms 7 to 11 in above the seat, a 400 lb capacity and a 12-year multi-shift warranty, with a height-adjustable lumbar plus a separate firmness dial. Foam does the two things mesh cannot: it holds a shaped contour rather than a flat plane, and it does not sag with age in the way a tensioned membrane does. What you give up is airflow, which is a genuine problem in a warm room, and the pan does not slide.

Who it fits

Anyone who wants a contoured, long-lived seat and does not run hot.

Who it does not fit

Anyone who overheats in a chair, and any long-thighed sitter needing a sliding pan.

2. Best for The mesh task chair case

Sihoo Doro C300

The type specimen at the accessible end of mesh. Sihoo publishes an 18.11 in seat depth, a 20.28 in seat width, a backrest 18.11 to 21.65 in high, a self-adapting dynamic lumbar, a 330 lb capacity and a three-year warranty. Mesh earns its place on airflow and on load spreading across a surface rather than concentrating in a contour - which is why it took over the premium category first and then everything below it. The honest cost at this price is tension over time: cheap mesh is stretched across a frame built to a price, and it goes slack earlier than expensive mesh does. Sihoo publishes an overall height of 42 to 49 in and no seat height.

Who it fits

Anyone who runs warm, in a room without good air movement.

Who it does not fit

Short sitters - a long fixed pan and no published seat height. Anyone wanting a contoured seat.

3. Best for The saddle case

HÅG Capisco 8106

The type specimen for saddle seating, and the most different thing on this page. Flokk publishes a seat height of 18.5 to 25.8 in - by far the highest range in our registry - an 18.5 in seat width, an adjustable pan of 13.4 to 16.5 in, a 300 lb rating, and a 10-year warranty against production defects with lifetime cover on the gas lifts. The saddle holds the pelvis more upright than a flat pan does, which keeps the lumbar curve without needing a backrest to push it there, and it can be sat on forwards, backwards or perched. The cost is stated plainly by the design itself: in the saddle position there is nothing to lean back into, so it is a chair for part of a day rather than all of it.

Who it fits

Anyone who works at a raised surface, or who wants a genuinely different position for part of the day.

Who it does not fit

Anyone over 300 lb, anyone who needs back support for eight hours, and anyone with a fixed-height desk.

4. Best for The kneeling chair case

DRAGONN by VIVO Adjustable Kneeling Chair

The type specimen for kneeling seating, and the only one with enough height range to be matched to a desk you already own - VIVO publishes 21 to 31 in of overall height adjustment, a 16 in seat width, a 12 in seat depth, a 250 lb capacity and a one-year warranty. The open hip angle is the entire mechanism: it tips the pelvis forward so the lumbar curve is maintained by geometry rather than by a pad. The cost is equally clear. Weight that a backrest would have taken goes through the shins, there is nothing to lean into, and there is no published seat height because the whole seat angles. Treat it as a second chair rather than a replacement.

Who it fits

Anyone wanting an alternative position for an hour or two a day alongside a conventional chair.

Who it does not fit

Anyone with knee problems, anyone over 250 lb, and anyone who wants one chair for a whole day.

Questions people actually ask

What are the pros and cons of a mesh office chair?

Mesh breathes and spreads load across a surface rather than into a contour, which is why it became standard on premium chairs. Against that, the tension slackens with age - sooner on cheaper frames - and you do not get a shaped seat.

Is a big and tall chair better for tall people?

Not necessarily. Big-and-tall chairs are engineered for weight capacity and seat width, and many have a backrest no taller than a standard chair. Check the published back height rather than the category name.

Are gaming chairs bad for your back?

They are shaped for a reclined position rather than an upright typing one, so the raised bolsters narrow an already narrow seat and the deep back holds you where you are not. If you genuinely work reclined, that criticism does not apply.

Can a kneeling chair replace an office chair?

For part of a day, not for all of it. The weight a backrest would take goes through your shins instead, and there is nothing to lean into. Most people who use one well use it alongside a conventional chair.

Which chair type is best for back pain?

A conventional task chair with adjustable lumbar height, because it is the only type that lets you place support at the level that hurts. Type matters far less than seat height and seat depth, which should be settled first.
